Mother of Red Mountains: A Novel of a Woman’s Journey Through Revolutionary China
In the shadow of China’s tumultuous mid-20th century, an ambitious civil engineer is determined to protect her baby girls.
Despite a childhood marked by tragedies, Jun carves out a stable life for herself while shrewdly and skillfully navigating a male-dominated and politically charged society. As she rises through the ranks in her profession, she turns to her in-laws to help care for her daughters.
But when the Red Guards target her young family due to their connection with her in-laws’ capitalist class, Jun fears their very existence is in jeopardy.
Amid frequent threats to their safety, can Jun rise above the challenges and safeguard both her family’s future and their fragile stability?
This historical fiction is dedicated to my mother and all loving mothers. It is a fiction based on true events and people.
I read it somewhere (sorry, bad memory on where): “If a story is within you, it will come out.” This book started as an appendix of a few pages that was part of my never published (2nd) memoir. As I was re-writing that memoir into a novel, this story snowballed and earned its right to be a stand alone book. Within two months, it grew from a thousand words to 30K then 40K. After alpha reading, developmental editing, and countless re-processing and revising, it stands at 60K words. The process of writing this book has been emotional and therapeutic. I am grateful for the feedback from my editor, several of my dear friends, and my sister.
From time to time, I will share some excerpts from the book in my newsletters. You can find these excerpts from my newsletter AABB’s tab “Mother.”
