About Apple An's Book Bytes
A Byte is a group of 8 Bits; a Bit is one binary digit, the smallest unit of information (in computer science).
A computer scientist in her previous life and a university professor in STEM fields for 30+ years, Apple started her literary journey in 2017, initially wanting to write for her children to understand their heritage. With the help from her writing instructors and peers, her writing goal has broadened to enrich Asian American cultural heritage and history and to enhance cultural understanding and acceptance among all people.
Published Books
Apple published her first book, Las Crosses, in 2023. It is a memoir of her journey from Beijing to Las Cruces, NM at the end of 1989 and her life experience during the first eight months in America. The book received award recognitions in the categories of women’s non-fiction, biographies/memoirs, travel, and multicultural/bilingual books. It earned 4.8/5 ratings from Amazon and 4.5 on Goodreads as of November 2024. Here is a summary of Amazon reviews.
Apple also designed an all-in-one dotted journal notebook that affords her a busy, productive, and mindful life. She published it in 2023 to use it herself and also help others to make their lives better. The book has been used by several of her friends, and people she doesn’t even know — anyone can order it online. Here is a snapshot of Amazon reviews.
Apple co-edits the Voices Anthology Series with Georgia A. Popoff that provides a channel for writers affiliated with the YMCA of Central NY's Writers Voice (used to be called Downtown Writer's Center) to share their life stories and world views. Vol 1, 28 Voices, was published in 2024. Vol 2 will be published in 2025.
Apple’s first historical novel, Mother of Red Mountains, will be released in December 2024. It is based on true events and people in China. The cover will be revealed soon!
What to Expect from AABB Newsletters as a Free Subscriber
AABB has a main newsletter (events, news/updates, fun facts, etc.) and several sub-newsletters for posts related to specific books or topics: memoirs, historical novels, anthology, self-help, travelogues, etc.
You are automatically subscribed to AABB main newsletter and all the sub-newsletters. You can change your preferences by clicking the unsubscribe link and then selecting or de-selecting certain sub-newsletters.
I send out a main post once every several weeks in AABB’s main newsletter. Under a special situation, like the real-time travelogue of my 29 days of traveling in 5 (or 7) southwest states with a campervan, or when a new book, such as Mother of Red Mountains, is out and some backstories or excerpts might be posted more frequently about the book. Most of these more frequent posts are within the sub-newsletters for easy reference and retrieval later.
When a newsletter is posted, you will receive it in your email inbox. Please white list the sending address: appleanbooks@substack.com or check your social, spam or junk folders.
In case you want to read the newsletters on the AABB website or read past posts, podcasts, excerpts from my work-in-progress novels, photos from events, and other interesting stuff, you can click this button.
Keep up with Apple An’s books, events, news, readings, drafts and excerpts, and other fun stuff. (Travels? Tennis? Ballroom dancing? Organic gardening? But most likely, AABB will stick with topics related to books!)
